What is this?

 Picture contributed by Gwyn Beattie.

Pseudomonas syringae bacterial cells on the surface of a bean leaf (Phaseolus vulgaris). The crevices shown are the junctions between the plant epidermal cells. The opening in the lower righthand corner is a plant stomate.

These bacteria live a dual life; they live as commensals on the surfaces of plants, much like the bacteria on our skin, but they can also invade the plant causing the disease Bacterial Brown Spot. They can also initiate the formation of ice causing frost injury.
