Britta Rued
Position
- Assistant Professor
The Rued Lab is interested in host microbiomes and the streptococci that inhabit these niches. Streptococci play a major role in the health of both humans, livestock, and companion animals, and can cause serious diseases. We are particularly interested in the secondary metabolites these streptococci produce, and how streptococci interact with the host and the environment to influence host health. Current areas of research in the lab are: examining the function and role of streptococcal RaS-RiPPs (radical S-adenosylmethonine ribosomally translated and post-translationally modified peptides) in the human oral microbiome, examining the regulation of RaS-RIPPs in streptococci, and the influence of streptococci on both human and animal hosts. We are also interested in the incidence and persistence of bacterial pathogens, particularly streptococci, in veterinary and farm settings. Dr. Rued combines the use of metagenomics, transcriptomics, genetics, and biochemistry to pursue these projects.
