Microbiology Major

Program of Study and Coursework

Students majoring in microbiology at Iowa State University will take core courses recommended by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). These courses and labs include:

  • General microbiology
  • Medical microbiology
  • Microbial genetics
  • Physiology

Students choose specialized upper level courses in either immunology, virology, parasitology, food microbiology, environmental microbiology or a combination of advanced courses to complete their degree.

There are several electives built into the schedule. There are also approved College of Ag & Life Science (CALS) electives that qualify for the Humanities, Social Science, US Cultures and Communities, Ethics and International Perspective requirements.

Micro 4900

If you are planning to obtain Micro 4900 credit by doing research for credit or assisting in a lab or classroom, please view the 4900 A-B (PDF) for Research Experience and 4900 C (PDF) for Learning Assistant contracts. The forms are not required but intended to be a guide to help you formulate a plan with your supervising instructor.
